Dryer Vent Cleaning: Clean Dryer Vents Annually to Prevent Dryer Fires

Dryer vent cleaning is very important appliance maintenance. Dryer vent cleaning prevents dryer fires and maintains maximum dryer performance. Most people are responsible when it comes to regular furnace cleaning, but few people give dryer vent cleaning a second thought.

People typically believe that as long as they clean the lint filter after each load then dryer vent cleaning is not necessary. They are sadly mistaken. The lint filter only traps about 60% of lint from laundry. Where does the rest go? There are several places that dryer lint can accumulate and become a fire hazard.

Inside the Dryer

A lot of the lint that gets past the lint trap can get caught up in a number of places throughout the dryer. You may be amazed to see how much lint has slipped past the trap and is now trapped in various portions of your dryer frame. This is not only messy but it’s a fire hazard as any spark inside the machine could set the lint aflame.

In the Dryer Duct

Lint accumulates in the dryer ducts and restricts air flow needed to remove heat and moisture from your home. Contrary to popular belief, the lint in the dryer duct rarely makes it to the vent outside. The dryer duct system is responsible for releasing heat and moisture; therefore, lint in the dryer duct is warm and sticky. Lint can easily become trapped in the dryer duct. It sticks to the sides of the duct, dries to a hard paste, and attracts more lint. As the lint accumulates, it blocks air flow, causing your dryer to work harder, use more energy, and eventually, cause a fire.

In the Dryer Vent

Check the dryer vent outside and you will likely find lint accumulated here. If there is accumulation here, then there is probably quite a bit inside the back of the dryer and in the dryer ducts. Remember, very little makes it to the vent outside. The more you see here, the greater risk of a dryer fire.

To keep your clothes dryer working, efficiently and safely, have a professional inspection and dryer vent cleaning at least once a year. If you have a large family and use your dryer almost daily, you may want to double that service schedule.
